What Is SCORE Chapter 166?

Our headquarters are in Santa Barbara, California. We have approximately 20 active members, male and female of varied backgrounds. We currently provide counseling on Wednesday mornings from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. (other times are available by appointment). Monthly meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month from 12:30 until 1:30 p.m. We are looking forward to providing additional counseling in the Goleta area in the near future.

Do I Have To Be Retired To Join SCORE?

No. Both retired and working professionals are welcome in SCORE

Why Does SCORE Interview Candidates Before Accepting Members?

Transferring business skills into a counseling and mentoring situation requires different and additional skills than a business owner or manager may have used. The interviewing process permits both SCORE and the applicant to see if there is a good fit.

Why Do New SCORE Members Participate In A Training Program?

The orientation and training program permits the new member to understand SCORE's mission, services, and opportunities within the organization. The Counselor Professional Development Program provides guidance on how to be a good business counselor and how to develop good listening, interviewing and problem-solving habits.

What Opportunities Exist For SCORE Members?

Small-business client counseling Cyber-counseling (i.e., e-mail counseling) Guest speaker at local organizations Special events coordinator Workshop presenter Marketing expert Membership development programs Office manager Fundraising Advisory Board for growing business Various leadership positions Interest in Web support Computer-literate members who are willing to learn by doing. Good knowledge of Microsoft Office is required. A member interested in overseeing and/or presenting regularly scheduled workshops on business subjects. Knowledge of Microsoft PowerPoint would be helpful. However, there are members who can help in this area. A member with legal background. While we do not provide legal advice directly, the one attorney member could use assistance with the high volume of legal questions arising during business counseling sessions.
